Pirate Mural for Royal Navy submarine Museum

Just completed the three walls as the Submarine Museum has a new exhibition to be opened for the summer holidays. Its going to be about piracy through the ages and why Royal navy submarines fly the Jolly roger. Ill let you find out why if you see the exhibition.

Ably assisted by my Father Robin Waterfield who painted the traditional pirates of the Carribean while I did the modern day pirates of Somalia and the WW1 and WW2 walls.

Southsea Skatepark Mural

Created with young people from Headspace ( a NHS group that helps young people with Psychosis) this mural was created with stencils made by the young people to represent their own feelings of positivity. Various symbols like a Lion or action figures were combined lettering statements such as "Courage" or "Energy". The young people were traced to create life sized figures in various healthy action poses.

General Monck Medal Workshop

They are modelled on General Monck a Civil war general and were made in plaster with various paint effects . The original was sculpted from milliput.

Fred Gibson from Gosport Borough Council very kindly invited me to run at Art workshop at grange farm open day. Using recycled wood, totem poles were created for kids to paint. The winners were judged by Gosports Lord mayor.

AntiBullying wall Mural

Created last year for the National Anti Bullying Campaign this was up dated and remade better with a backdrop wall painted a fetching red, stencilled letters.

The mirror is actually mirrored perpex that catchs the light nicely.

King Richard School Murals

These Murals were each created as 4ft by 4ft boards that [pupils could create their own street art style mural panels that when placed together and mounted on the Science and Maths block under the title Identity.

As you can see bright and colourful they stand out a mile against bare brick 1950's style walls.

Several of my students work here and a very popular subject is the green man.
Created in clay the green man was created by Steve who had never sculpted before.

Leesland Park festival green Man workshop

Every year I am asked to run a workshop For the Leesland park fest. Its something I really enjoy for a terrific group of people who look after a community park that benefits the whole area. There is something for toddlers through to teenagers to dog walkers and OAPS.

St Paul's School Creation Mural

This Mural projected was completed with Year 10's from my school who wished to gain experience in being involved with Health and Social Care courses and the primary School children of St Pauls School in Paulsgrove.
St Pauls is a Catholic School and the theme of the Mural was the Seven Days of Creation. The children took part in representing the various days and the garden of Eden and a a giant map of the world showing people of all differents colours and creeds.
The Mural was part of a rennovation that included new paving to create an outdoor classroom and was opened by the Bishop of Portsmouth.

Paulsgrove Underpass Mural project.

Its been 4 months since I last blogged so lots of new projects I have been working on have come to completion.
First Up is the Portsmouth Underpass project that tied my own School with all the primary schools in Paulsgrove to complete an underpass mural project to brighten up a dingy Underpass that connects paulsgrove and Wymering to IBM North Harbour.
With Supporet from Carey and Sue the Paulsgrove community Wardens the background was again a DNA chain with stencilled characters representing the family life of Paulsgrove people.
Over the top of this was fixed Marine Ply boards depicting the primarys childs eye view of the paulsgrove area in the form of a street map.
The teenagers at my school completed more street art youth orientated views of what life is like for a teenager in Paulsgrove.
The Underpass was opened by Our Local MP Sarah Mc Carthy -Fry and featured on local radio, TV and an article in the evening news.
I was very pround of the kids Achievements.

A quick commissioned portrait done in a matter of days of a guy called "Dougie"
Unfortunately Dougie has passed away and all the customer had was a print from a photograph.
This kind of portrait is particularly hard as without proper photographs its hard to get a good likeness as well as injecting some vitality into the portrait.

St Albans Skate Park event

The weather was atrocious but the kids bless their hearts showed up in the rain to spray their BMX bikes and skateboards. It was only a shame it was impossible for me to do more.

Spent an eventful summer working for mark "Rocky " Lewis and his arts organisation , the Art and Soul traders.
Mark is a true troubadour for the arts and comitted to bringing art to all. If you ever in Victoria Park, Portsmouth, support his organisation by having a cup of coffee at the Lodge and check out an art exhibition. The Lodge has regular art exhibitions in great surroundings.
We worked on projects such as K2 in Southampton and Heron court in Worthing. Big respect to the talented Verse and mike Brady too the next generation of up and comimg street artists.

Submarine Museum Workshop

Using the fantasy submarine room and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea as a basis we created treasure islands, Pirate ships and sea monster models. The boats made out of balsa could really float!

Dinosaur Mural

Well as the school holidays finished I began once more a lot of Art projects.

Its been a very hectic few weeks but lots was achieved enjoy!

First for my old school friend Shaun Green i painted a dinosaur Mural for his two young boys.

This was a great project as the kids spent a session drawing with me and telling me what they wanted to see in the mural such as a volcano.

If you look closely at the pics you can see the two boys great little drawings.Looks like I am going to have competition from these two little talented artists!

Dog portraits pop art style

It was a tall order but I think I pulled it off.My work colleague Carl Beck wanted a picture of his dogs Rocky and Shannon for his wifes Eliza's birthday.

Both Carl and Eliza are big fans of 60's style and Northern Soul music so wanted something in a Warhol? pop art style.

Their greyhounds Rocky and Shannon are teal characters and i think I have captured their personalities and incorporated it into a pop art style picture.

Totem Pole at Grange farm , Gosport

PHA once again supported me by commissioning this Totem pole sculpture at an open day Grange Farm Gosport.

Fred Gibson the head of Gosport Borough Councils Countryside section very kindly helped out.

Using a woodburner the young people were able to draw little faces that I could burn on and make permanent. Cooperatively it made a large fun sculpture. Once again thanks to Styuart Mills and Goizeder Cotano for their support.

New York Mural for Eden Barber shop

I must wish Miles and Wade good luck with their newly opened Barber shop called Eden in Winter Road Southsea.

The guys comissioned me to create a New York city mural for their shop.

I was really pleased with the result and I think the addition of some really tasteful Art deco style furniture really sets it off.

Community Art at the Nimrod centre Rowner Gosport

The Nimrod Community centre in the middle of the Rowner housing estate is being extended so surrounding the building site was a large hoarding.This has become the background of a community art project that I completed fopr Portsmouth Housing Association. The kids of Rowner wre a real pleasure to work with. So thanks must go out to Start Mills and Goizeder Cotano of Pha and Lee and Julie of the Gosport Youth service.

Working again with the Art and Soul Traders

I have been working a lot lately for Mark "Rocky" Lewis of the Art and Soul traders based in The lodge In Victoria Park, Portsmouth.

He has been leading art projects for the Youth Service of Hayling Island and most recently a big mural project up at the new wing of Saint Marys Hospital

Mark is truly comitted to Art in the community and remarkably pretentious free.

So show your support for a champion of the arts in Portsmouth.

The Victoria ParK lodge has a great cafe selling Fair Trade coffee as well as a little Art Gallery inside.Its just been refurbished and made larger.

Pop down buy a coffee or lunch and know that the money will help support The Art and Soul Traders and help many different groups benefit from the arts in the Portsmouth area.

Durty Bloc Party Havana

Did a live graffiti wall outside Havana for the Durty Bloc Party benefit gig for southsea skatepark.

Freezing cold outside Havana but it was cool inside.Great breakdancers if you missed it. Working in the night I felt like a "Real" graffiti artist as you can tell from the pics.

Whats made if better is a lovely woman called Jan from Midhurst came up and bought the boards for her teenage sons wall! Big up respect to Jan and to my man Mike Brady who did a cool cartoon samurai on his half.

Rising Son

I am just set to start a little show of my work at at Cha Chas café bar and gallery 93 Palmerston Road Southsea from Friday 30th November 2007.

Feel free to come along from 7 pm, and it will be on show for the next monthy so if you doing your Christmas shopping in Southsea pop in and have a look.

It features recent work that has not been shown before. The exhibition is called Rising Son as lately I have been very inspired by the Japanese style of woodblock art and the more modern Manga. In a way I am trying to marry this style with my fast and immediate street style spray can art.

It is also a play on words as the Japanese national flag is known as the Rising Sun and I am a son of my father.

Also its in honour of my father who was my first artistic inspiration to me Rob Waterfield.As his son I am very proud of him and as his son I hope I am making him proud.

Kellys Halloween Birthday Party

Attended a great party for the extremely talented Kelly who is also a fellow teacher. Being Greek and her birthday fell just after Halloween she asked us all to come in fancy dress as a character from Greek mythology. Well It was a chance for me to get sculpting again which i have not done for quite a while and being the natural exhibitionist I am I came as a Minotaur.
I also created kellys medusa look with the help of a lot of plastic snakes and rubber bands.

My daughter has got to be one of the worlds biggest Dr Who fans. I must admit I have a soft spot (from my Childhood too).

Its a real shame as I had tickets for the Dr Who play , "The Dalek Masterplan " at the Theatre Royal in Portsmouth. So I took my friends little boy Logan with me. It was great, a bit overlong for small children but the Daleks were great .Especially when they exterminated someone in a blast of dry ice.

I created this huge 5 ft by 5ft canvas for my daughters bedroom and features her favourite villians.

Tracy's Halloween Party

Had a great Halloween at the extremely talented Tracy Herrity's house.

My daughter and I absolutely loved it. Tracy had really gone over the top with a life size dead body hanging from a gallows outside and indoors a huge spider inspired by the Louise Bourgois Exhibition at Tate Modern .

outside tracy had hidden fairys and sweets for the kids to find.

One day I am sure Tracy will be orgainising proper events as it was a magical evening.

Love Albert Road Day

I must admit I enjoyed myself with my Daughter at Love Albert Road day a few weekends ago.Hopefully this will be a yearly thing but I do hope the organisers provide more art and music for the visitors , kind of like a little Notting Hill Carnival. I enjoyed the Silver Beatles on the rooftop , but a lot of pubs who made a fortune that day selling alcohol could have pulled their fingers out and pumped some money in top quality entertainment outside.

Portsmouth business needs to realise that artists and musicians deserve to get paid too and if they spend some money they will get it basck as people will stop to enjoy the sights and sounds

School Bully

Just completed for my school playground and constructed by my year 7 pupils and I is a mural based around bullying. Looking at a distorted angery face through a cracked mirror the theme is ,"How can you look at yourself in the mirror if you bully" Completed with spray paint and mirrored perspex.

Leesland "Parkfest" Gosport

I had a great time a few weekends ago at the Leesland Parkfest in Gosport.

For those who don't know Gosport or Leesland Park its a community park in the Centre of Gosport.

It is one of the most successful community parks I know as it caters for all members of society. it has play equipment for youg kids. a football pitch and skatepark for teenagers.Lots of wide open space for games and dogwalkers. A sensory garden for the disabled, fallow ground for local wildlife and allotments for the more horticultura older generation.

I have been running art workshops for the last 3 years at the Parkfest. The first was a totem pole when members of the community drew on pieces of wood which I burned with a pyrograph. which you can see standing above. The second year was a willow workshop but this years was the most successful.

First was a zombie hunt where I hid casts of head csculptures I had made around the park. the kids hag great fun finding these, and I hope maybe some havre been left behind to scare the dog walkers.
secondly was a mural in the skatepark . Previously I had ran a graffiti workshop where we sprayed the equipment now the actual floor of the skatepark became a huge burial ground for zombies to erupt out of it, "Dawn of the Dead" style

Afterwards I could have a few beers and enjoy some great bands.

Well its just been the celebration of 100 years of the kings theatre so heres a blast from the past. A friend and work colleague of mine Matt Gill has a band called Blue Sky Research.

It was while looking at their group shots I noticed it was at the Kings Theatre. The backdrop behind them was painted by my father Rob and I over 20 odd years ago. The lettering was painted by local sign writer Roy Emmet.

If you look carefully you can see its in edwardian style to fit the theatre, with my dads "old master" versions of the Mary Rose and the Victory.

I only did the boring bits of background and cutting in, but hey I was only a kid then, but it does make me proud to see that the curtain is still up after all these years.

The Yellow Submarine Gallery is now open!

Its finally finished!

The Yellow Submarine Gallery in the Submarine Museum, Gosport, is now open. It features wall murals by me featuring fantasy scences from Jules Vernes "20,000 leagues under the Sea" and the Beatles movie, "Yellow Submarine" It also features a play Yellow Submarine like a wendy house which I also painted so your kids can pretend to be the Fab Four on a journey under the sea!

My daughter loved it, there are games to play and artifacts to touch so if you have young children is recommended.

Thanks to Bob and Jackie for comissioning me. I am particulary proud of this work as the staff at the museum have really made an effort and accentuated my work by using such thinggs as blue halogen spot lightys that give the impression of being under the sea.

Big up Trevor Adams

Its always a sense of pride when a student you have taught does well so here a a big Pat on the back for Trevor Adams. due to child protection issues you can only see his face in the mask!

Trevor in one of my lessons designed the Logo for a campaign based on Alcohol abuse by young people. His "Think don't drink" Logo has been used by Portsmouthy city council and has been printed on banners around the city. Also its been used on stationary, pencils and flyers. So congratulations to Trevor and he won an I-pod!

This summer I had a great oppotunity to work with the pupils of Bridgemary school Gosport on a great Graffiti/ Strret art mural.

Each student was able to take each letter and with my help design their own version of the schools name Bridgemary.

This was quick throw up for my Friend Tony Wallace whose Tattoo parlour had its windows smashed. With just whiteboards up Tony's shop just looked closed and with rain clouds appearing, I had only had 2 hours to complete this and get Tony's shop looking presentable again . Titchfield Primary Murals

I had the good fortune of meeting the headmaster of Titchfield Primary, Mike Bainbridge at the Gunwharf Waterfront festival , when his school children were playing their steel drums. He very kindly invited myself with several of My year 10's to facilitate an art workshop to paint some murals in an otherwise drab playground.All of us had a great time , the kids and staff of Titchfield Primary were lovely and my year 10's enjoyed themselves so much that they wanted a job working with primary children. The tree picture covered up an ugly drainage pipe with its trunk and the leaves were made from handprints from each of the school children.

Its been a hectic few weeks for me , hence the lack of posts. I have been working on a lot of projects as School ends and the summer workshops start. This Subway mural project is the start of hopefully a larger project in partnership with the Portsmourth City Council wardens and all the primary schools around the Paulsgrove area..The theme is Paulsgrove (For anyone who does not know is a large housing estate in the north of the City of Portsmouth) The theme is family and community and features an abstraction of the DNA chain with little stencils of figures representing all the people of paulsgrove from babies to old age pensioners , skateboarders to young mothers and dogwalkers.

Just completed the Caribbean steel pan festival at Gunwharf this weekend. Obviously I was so busy I did not get a chance to see it all but what I saw it was great. A great metal dragon with drummers inside, steel pans , great bands and my lovely daughter joining in the fun.

I'd like to be under the sea, in an octopuses garden in the shade.

Just completed this over the may bank holiday for the Submarine mueseum in Gosport.Going to e buying my flat and moving in on the 15th of May so I am going to be out of action on the computer front for a while , So i will frantically post as much as i can before i lose the internet connection.

The theme of this mural is fantasy submarines , so there is jules Vernes Nautilus from 20,000 leagues under the sea and the Yellow submarine. If you look closely , you might even see the Beatles in the portholes.

I don't know when thge Gallery will be open to the public but hopefully , for the start of the summer holidays. I will keep you posted. Thanks to the lovely people , Bob the Curator and Jackie , the education officer for having the vision for this job and to ask me to paint for them.

Caribbean Festival at Gunwharf quays

In April I had the pleasure of running another Art workshop for gunwharf quays, for their Caribbean festival. I had the assistance of one of my co workers from King richard school ,the lovely Lucy Lebbie.

The Caribbean festival is ON AGAIN! , if you missed it first time around on the weekend of the 19th and 20th of May at Gunwharf quays.

There is going to be steel Pans, calypso and reggae. So pop down , create some art , have a beer and enjoy the music hope you can come!

Hi all, Long time since i have posted, teaching school work and buying my flat and dealing with all the legal stuff. Had time to squeeze in a workshop with the kids down at the Buckland community centre with Rocky from the Art and Soul Traders. Lots of projects in the pipeline hopefully. Now the weathers better pop down the Lodge and get yourself a nice cup of coffee in Victoria park.

Just dug out these sketches I did of a local band who have their own website. Feckless are a great roots/folk band. If you like Irish music you'll love 'em.Regularly playing in local venues i well recommend you check them out.Take a look at them at www.fecklessmusic.com
These sketches were done live!That is drawn quickly while the guys were playing, most taking around ten minutes to sketch.You've got to work fast if you want to capture musicians at work!

Once again I did some more work this weekend with Mark "Rocky" Lewis of the Art and Soul Traders.The New Buckland community centre had an open day.So part of that was creating some graffiti/street art murals with the kids.
The murals on 8X4 ft boards of ply and created with a boys version and a girls mural.
I must say a nicer bunch of people i could not hope to meet.The kids were great and polite, and the staff at the centre were all really supportive.Buckland gets a bad press as a "Bad " area of portsmouth, but this was completely the opposite.A fantastic new resource and the community really responded.Thanks to Debbie Mac, Penny , Briony, Steve the caretaker and anyone else I missed , for a great two days.

Well my kids from school got involved with a Dr Who model building workshop. Luckily at the same time a theatre group are putting on a production of
Evil of the Daleks at the New Theatre Royal Portsmouth,

With work and everything being so busy, i don't get the time to post as much as i would like. But yesterday i got a fantastic surprise from Mark"Rocky" Lewis at the LOdge in Victoria Park. His Friends Matt and Lisa from Tiny Horse Media made a DVd of the Farmside summer workshop callec"Pimp my Wall"

Canterbury Street Festival

Had a great time at the Canterbury street festival. Canterbury is a great place and the street festival had some amazing street performers. There were crazy bands, great musicians, b boys and mad puppets and performers.
My thanks to John Sackett and Martyn Barr and to Jo Treharne for organising it and putting it me up.Her own arts organisation "Lucky Jammers " did a great job of the kids procession and workshops.I hope i am invited next year. I hope they have a website soon so i can link it.
Art in the street where the public are interacting and maybe not expecting it in a shopping centre, really gave me a buzz. There is something about it that made it purer.People stopping in their tracks and watching with joy and bemusement.No pretensions at all.

Working for the Art and Soul Traders

This summer i had the good fotune to hook up with some artists and video makers on a variety of community art projects, The Art and Soul Traders are wll known in Portsmouth, based in the Lodge at Victoria Park. Run by Mark "Rocky" Lewis they have been involved in years of community art projects and free parties in the park. A lovely bunch of people click on the link

3 years and its still there!

Took a trip down Specks lane atFratton Park , home of Portsmouth Football club.The Mural I painted there with my dad Rob Waterfield and kids and helpers from portsmouth youth services, is still pretty much untouched.A few bits of graffiti, nothing that could not be repaired with half a days painting.

It seems amazing to me how its lasted so well, people who wandered by liked it while we were painting but always remarked it would be destroyed instantly.Maybe its touched a cord?.The whole of the alleyways around Fratton Park are filled with some great Graffiti murals.Its a huge surface area.If you look at the pic each wall asection of concrete is a metre across so its around 40 metres long.

Whats going to happen when they make the new stadium?Will it all be knocked down to make way for the new walls?

It would be nice if they involved the community in an art workshop around the new stadium, or maybe designs inside.

We can live in hope.

Mambo surf art workshop at Extreme 2006

Here are some pics of the summer workshop.Thanks to Cam, GT and Brian from Mambo for getting it all organised and helping oot.We hads great fun painting T Shirts and i used a lot of stencils for the kids to spray on the wall.
Music was not as loud this year which was a real let down as i felt the atmosphere was affected.Still the art wall was as manic as ever.Enjoy the pics, and check out the ones of mty lovely daughter joining in.

Hi all, here and following are the pics of what i did over summer.

I worked on a lot of Community Art Projects for Mambo at the EXtreme sports festival Gunwharf, Art and Soul Traders and for Gunwharf's parent company Landsecurities at the CAnterbury Street Fest 06.

I'll be posting pics and comments in the future, as now I slow down for the autumn term as an Art teacher at King Richard School paulsgrove. But still lots of projects in the planning stages. Keep watching this space!

Oh the pic included is me with the Mambo Art wall at Extreme 2006 Gunwharf quays. I designed it in the shape of a tsunami wave and surfboards.
